3D Printing for Product Designers in Malaysia — From CAD to Physical Prototype in 48 Hours
· general
A design decision you can hold in your hand is worth ten you can only see on screen. Product designers who build physical prototypes early catch ergonomic problems before tooling, align stakeholder expectations before investment, and iterate faster than teams that wait for moulded samples. This guide is for product designers in Malaysia looking to compress that loop — from CAD to physical model in 48 hours.

Matching Prototype Fidelity to Your Design Stage
Not every prototype needs the same fidelity. The right prototype for a sketch review is different from the right prototype for a client presentation or an ergonomic user test.

Surface Finish Options in Malaysia
Surface finish is where most designers underestimate the scope of what is achievable from 3D printing:
As-Printed
FDM parts show visible layer lines (0.1–0.2mm step height). Acceptable for internal reviews and functional testing. Not suitable for client-facing presentation without further work.
SLA parts come off the machine with a near-smooth surface at 0.025–0.05mm layer resolution. Suitable for many presentation contexts with minimal post-processing.
Sanded Primed
FDM parts sanded from 120 → 400 → 800 grit and primed with automotive spray primer become difficult to distinguish from injection moulded samples to the naked eye.
Painted
Spray or brush painting in any RAL or Pantone colour. Metallic, matte, gloss, and texture finishes all achievable. For client presentations, painted SLA parts are the standard.
Functional Surface Textures
SLS Nylon PA12 produces a naturally matte, slightly grainy surface that reads as "industrial" or "technical" — ideal for sporting goods, medical devices, and industrial tools.
File Preparation for Designers
Most designers work in Fusion 360, Rhino, SolidWorks, or Blender. Here is what you need to know before sending files:
Export format: STL or STEP preferred. OBJ accepted. Native CAD files (F3D, 3DM, SLDPRT) also accepted at 3D Forger — no need to export if you are unsure.
Scale check: Export at real-world scale. If your object is 150mm tall in CAD, it should be 150mm in the STL. Common error: exporting in incorrect units (mm vs cm vs inc
